The 2030 World Cup is officially planned with 48 teams, the same format used in 2026. On 20 July 2026, CONMEBOL president Alejandro Domínguez said the tournament would have 64 teams, but FIFA has not confirmed any change.
FIFA president Gianni Infantino has said the 64-team proposal "will be examined and discussed". Critics argue a larger field would devalue qualification.
For fans, more teams would mean more matches, and potentially more venues and a longer tournament. We will update our guides if the format changes.
